Elevate – Architectural Portfolio

Course Description

This skill-development course is designed as a critical bridge between academic work and professional practice. It is tailored specifically for 5th and 6th-semester B.Arch. students who have accumulated a substantial body of academic work but lack the tools to effectively curate and present it. The course moves beyond the typical "pin-up" or jury presentation to focus on the creation of a cohesive, professional, and compelling portfolio that acts as the student's primary architectural identity. Students will learn to treat their portfolio as a design project in itself, where the medium (the book/pdf) is a reflection of the designer’s philosophy, rigor, and creativity. After successful completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Curate and critically evaluate a diverse body of academic architectural work to select projects that holistically demonstrate a range of design skills, scales, and conceptual thinking relevant to professional practice. 2. Construct a cohesive visual and textual narrative that connects multiple projects, articulates a personal design philosophy, and effectively communicates the iterative design process to a professional audience. 3. Apply advanced principles of graphic design—including typography, grid systems, visual hierarchy, and colour theory—using industry-standard software (Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) to develop a visually compelling and readable portfolio layout. 4. Produce a comprehensive professional portfolio package, including a high-resolution PDF, an interactive digital document, and a supporting oral presentation, that meets the technical and aesthetic standards required for internship, job, or graduate school applications.

Explore the comprehensive course modules

1 Project Selection

Students begin by critically auditing their academic portfolio to identify "hero" projects that showcase diverse skills. This module focuses on creating a project matrix, eliminating redundant work, and strategically selecting pieces that demonstrate growth, technical proficiency, and conceptual depth, ensuring every included project serves a distinct narrative purpose.

2 Framework

This module shifts focus from mere project documentation to crafting compelling stories around each design. Students develop a personal design philosophy, structure their portfolio thematically or chronologically, and write concise, engaging project descriptions. Emphasis is placed on transforming design briefs into captivating narratives that guide the viewer's journey.

3 Graphic Language Visual Asset Refinement

Students learn to standardize their visual language by establishing colour palettes, typography, and graphic elements. Workshops focus on advanced techniques in Photoshop and Illustrator to create stunning diagrams, stylized renderings, and refined drawings. The goal is to translate complex spatial ideas into crisp, universally understandable visual assets.

4 Layout Design Information Hierarchy

This module introduces the principles of grid systems, page composition, and typographic hierarchy using Adobe InDesign. Students learn to balance text, imagery, and white space across spreads to enhance readability. Emphasis is placed on creating dynamic layouts that direct the viewer's eye and elevate the overall aesthetic quality.

5 Peer Review, Critique Iterative Refinement

Students participate in mock juries and structured peer-review sessions to receive constructive feedback on their draft portfolios. This iterative process encourages critical self-assessment, allowing students to identify weaknesses, rectify inconsistencies, and refine their layouts based on diverse perspectives before finalizing their work.

6 Final Production Digital Distribution

The final module covers technical execution, including file compression, colour calibration, and creating interactive PDFs with embedded hyperlinks. Students also receive an introduction to building a simple web landing page. The module culminates in the submission of a polished, professional-grade portfolio ready for internships or job applications.
