Duration

The minimum duration of the Ph.D. programme is three years from the date of registration. This period allows scholars to complete coursework, comprehensive examinations, and their research work at a steady pace. The maximum duration permitted is six years, providing sufficient time to carry out in-depth research and develop a high-quality thesis.

Maximum Ph.D. duration
  • The Ph.D. programme shall be for a maximum duration of six (6) years from the date of admission to the Ph.D. programme.
  • A maximum of an additional two (2) years can be given. However, total period for completion of a Ph.D. programme should not exceed eight (8) years from the date of admission in the Ph.D. programme.
  • Female Ph.D. scholars and Persons with Disabilities (having more than 40% disability) may be allowed an additional relaxation of two (2) years; however, the total period for completion of a Ph.D. programme in such cases should not exceed ten (10) years from the date of admission in the Ph.D. programme.
Academic Leave (for female research scholars only)

The female Ph.D. Scholars may be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave for up to 180 days (as per the government regulation) the entire duration of the Ph.D. programme.

This duration framework applies to both full-time and part-time Ph.D. candidates, in accordance with the university’s academic regulations.

Attendance Policy

The following guidelines shall be applicable for Ph.D. scholars.

  • The Ph.D. scholars need to attend the mandatory course work at University campus.
  • Scholar will be required to maintain 75% attendance during the course work to be eligible to attend end-term examination.
  • After the successful completion of the course work, the scholars will be allocated with the supervisor with whom the scholars would be required to attend the scheduled interaction slots.
  • The interaction with the supervisor can be held in offline mode, online mode through LPU My Class platform or hybrid mode (online+ offline).
  • All Ph.D. research scholars need to maintain at least 75% attendance in interaction slots to be eligible for End term presentation.
  • Apart from pre-scheduled interaction slots, additional interactions slots as scheduled by the supervisor shall be mandatory for the scholar to attend.
  • Bonus attendance and duty leave criteria shall be as applicable as per University Policy.
  • All Ph.D. scholars availing government fellowships are required to mark their biometric attendance on all University Working days at designated biometric machine in their respective blocks for minimum of 5 hrs from 08:00 AM to 06:00 PM.

Note: Ph.D. research scholars for whom the Pre-Submission evaluation is recommended, will be exempt from the attendance requirements.
