Lovely Professional University understands the importance of sustainable water extraction. The university also employs sustainable energy solutions such as solar technology for water extraction. The university uses groundwater judiciously for its daily activities and has adopted advanced technologies to ensure responsible usage. Key initiatives include rainwater harvesting and storage, recycling and reusing treated wastewater, and implementing water conservation practices to minimize dependence on aquifers. Piezometers are used to monitor groundwater extraction, while continuous tracking of water consumption helps optimize usage and reduce environmental impact. In addition, nano membrane filtration and wastewater treatment systems are used to produce treated water, which is utilized for agricultural and landscaping purposes. Rainwater harvesting is not just an aspiration but a tangible commitment to sustainable water management. Our approach to extracting on-campus water resources is characterized by a rigorous process that places environmental responsibility at the forefront. We operate within the strict parameters established and approved by the Department of Water Resources, under the Ministry of Jal-Shakti, Government of India. These guidelines and daily extraction limits are meticulously followed to ensure full compliance and minimize any adverse impact on the local water ecosystem. By adhering to these regulations, LPU ensures that its rainwater harvesting practices are not only effective but also sustainable, serving as a model for responsible water resource utilization.
LPU has taken significant strides toward sustainable water management, setting a standard for environmental stewardship on and off campus. To monitor water usage effectively, 32 digital water meters have been installed across bore wells, accurately measuring the volume of groundwater extracted. Powered by solar pumps, these systems enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions associated with water extraction. The integration of digital water meters in each borehole ensures accurate tracking and promotes responsible water use. This advanced technology supports LPU’s mission to provide safe and clean drinking water to its entire community while prioritizing sustainability. To safeguard groundwater levels, the university also employs rainwater recharge structures, ensuring replenishment during rainfall. Through the use of gravity-based purification systems, rainwater is collected at elevated points, flowing freely without extra energy demands. LPU also explores modern water purification and reuse methods, including desalination and membrane-based filtration, harnessing solar energy for further eco-friendly practices.
LPU’s responsible approach to groundwater use is supported by government authorization from the Punjab Water Regulation and Development Authority, permitting up to 4,600 cubic meters of daily water extraction—sufficient for its expansive campus population of over 50,000. Piezometers are used to monitor groundwater extraction levels, and the university utilizes nano-membrane filtration, wastewater treatment, and treated water for agricultural purposes, demonstrating a holistic commitment to sustainable water management. Rainwater harvesting is integral to this mission, with the university following rigorous extraction protocols to ensure compliance, sustainability, and minimal environmental disruption, establishing LPU as a model of responsible water resource management.
