Through these collaborations, LPU demonstrates direct cooperation with regional government to improve community water security.
Lovely Professional University (LPU), in collaboration with the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on 02th March 2024, organized a specialized educational visit for civil engineering students to a dam site focused on Dam Break Flow Analysis, reinforcing its commitment to Clean Water, Sanitation, and Water Security. The activity emphasized disaster risk reduction, dam safety, and sustainable water resource management through hands-on learning in risk assessment, emergency planning, inundation mapping, breach simulation, hydrograph analysis, and downstream flood wave routing. Students explored both 1D and 2D hydraulic modeling using tools such as HEC-RAS and GIS, enabling them to analyze real-world flood risks and water system dynamics of dam breaches with practical training in hydrodynamic simulation and emergency preparedness. This initiative enriched students’ technical expertise, built awareness of disaster resilience, and inspired them to contribute to sustainable water infrastructure.
LPU regularly partners with the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST) and is supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India on water conservation events and innovation workshops. These events feature contributions by national scientists, municipal leaders, and government advisors, reinforcing LPU’s active role in policymaking and community engagement.
By hosting international conferences such as ICAIAEESD and Sustainable Cities, LPU convenes experts and policymakers from leading institutions to foster global cooperation on water security solutions. Faculty and students engage in Indo-Canadian summits and international projects addressing water purification and policy, cementing LPU’s standing in worldwide water security initiatives.
LPU has active cooperation with the Punjab Water Supply & Sewerage Board (PWSSB)—resulting in co-developed projects, student internships, and government-led innovation pilots. These projects are documented as joint efforts for water resource security and efficiency across the region.
LPU’s teams participate in cross-sector water security activities—from Smart India Hackathon to field research and technical consulting on local government water schemes. Every major project is supported with participant lists and media documentation, directly demonstrating evidence of sustained, results-oriented cooperation on water security at all levels
Students from Lovely Professional University spearheaded a clean-up initiative along the Sutlej River, one of Punjab's prominent rivers. This outreach activity involved collaborative efforts with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) to collect waste from the riverbed, showcasing their commitment to environmental stewardship. By actively participating in this "Clean Drive," the students not only contributed to revitalizing the river's ecosystem but also raised awareness about the importance of preserving natural water resources. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6, underscoring the university's dedication to ensuring clean water and sanitation for all.
LPU actively contributes to sustainable water management practices in collaboration with government bodies, supporting the upkeep and beautification of the near by NH44 road side landscape along national highways and managing roadside drainage systems. The university’s Planning and Development Cell plays a key role in maintaining the NH44 highway adjacent to the campus, enhancing the area with verdant landscaping, regular waering to plants, cleaning, and the upkeep of roadside water channels to prevent water accumulation, benefiting the surrounding community. Through community-focused initiatives, LPU partners with local and national highway authorities, fostering synergies that tackle real-world challenges related to groundwater seepage and sustainable water management practices.
LPU students contributed to a sustainable cities initiative in Udaipur, Rajasthan, by assessing the expansion of the sewerage system, focusing on treatment capacity, pipeline enhancements, and future planning. This proposal introduces the development of a state-of-the-art 60 Million Liters per Day (MLD) water treatment plant, designed to address these challenges and safeguard Udaipur's water future.
Addressing these deficiencies Clogged Drainage in the existing drainage system is crucial for improving stormwater management and reducing the impact of flooding on the city. By treating water to meet safety standards and delivering it efficiently through pipelines, this project aims to provide a reliable source of clean water for Udaipur's residents and promote sustainable water management practices.
Lovely Professional University is focused towards water cleaning projects in collaboration with the industry & government in Punjab using Geographic information system (GIS) and machine learning technique for the betterment of our nation. LPU collaborated with various local regional, national and international government bodies on water security. In this pursuit LPU conducted a yearlong field survey at local levels and this survey reveals that providing access to clean drinking water can have important effects beyond nutrition and general health, with help of projects aimed at providing clean water account for people’s perceptions of water quality and promote good hygiene practices.
In addition, this project aims at assessing and mapping the groundwater contamination in the Punjab region by making use of satellite technologies, GIS, image processing, and machine learning-based techniques.
Event organized by the Student Organization Cell, Division of Student Welfare at Lovely Professional University, this event brought together students, university maintenance incharge and more than 100 community members. The aim was to raise awareness about the importance of water utilization by urging people to transition from traditional plumbing fixtures and fittings to water-efficient alternatives. These changes can significantly reduce water waste and lead to cost savings on water and electricity bills, which is particularly crucial in areas with high water production and supply costs.
