Promoting conscious water usage on Campus

Sustainable water extraction on campus through Infrastructure

Lovely Professional University integrates advanced water-efficient infrastructure to minimize consumption and promote conscious usage. All buildings are equipped with rainwater harvesting systems connected to a central collection pool and a dedicated 9-inch pipeline stretching over a kilometer for efficient distribution. Greywater from sinks, showers, and laundry is recycled for flushing and irrigation, while low-flow faucets, aerators, and dual-flush toilets significantly reduce potable water use. Smart irrigation with drip systems, soil-moisture sensors, and drought-resistant landscaping further conserves resources. Regular leak detection and maintenance ensure zero avoidable wastage — reflecting LPU’s strong commitment to sustainable campus development.

LPU Solar Water Extraction Bore

Sustainable water extraction on campus

University utilizes groundwater extraction through bore wells while ensuring that rainwater recharge structures are in place to replenish groundwater levels during rainfall. The university has Government approval to abstract 4600 cubic metres of water consumption per day which is sufficient for a campus population of more than 50000, however the water use is judicious and is not used till its highest level. These bores are well certified by Department of Water resources,”Punjab Water Regulation and Development Authority”. University has 32 drinking water bores and shallow bores through which fresh water extracted and is made available to all at zero cost at various locations of campus with energy saving solar water pumps to run the water pumping system in the campus. Additionally, LPU explores advanced methods such as desalination, wastewater treatment, and membrane-based technologies for water purification and reuse. Solar energy is also harnessed for water purification and extraction, further reducing the carbon footprint and enhancing sustainability efforts. These initiatives underscore LPU's commitment to fostering environmentally responsible practices that ensure water sustainability for future generations.

LPU’s Integrated Rainwater Harvesting and Groundwater Recharge: Advancing Cooperation on Water Security

Lovely Professional University has developed an integrated rainwater harvesting and management system that directly supports cooperation on water security. A dedicated pipeline network captures runoff from rooftops, parking areas, and roads, channeling it into storage tanks and recharge wells. The collected water is filtered for reuse in irrigation, flushing, and landscaping, while excess supplies recharge groundwater, reducing dependence on borewells and preventing waterlogging. To strengthen this system, LPU has installed 39 rainwater harvesting bores (reverse bores), which have raised the groundwater table by nearly six feet, as confirmed through piezometer monitoring. Regular tracking and maintenance ensure effective system performance and guide future conservation strategies. These initiatives minimize wastage, enhance resilience, and replenish aquifers, while aligning with SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). Through such efforts, LPU demonstrates its commitment to sustainable water management and indirectly collaborates with local to global agendas on water security.
