Educational Outreach Programs Related To Sustainable Management Of Land For Agriculture

LPU places a strong emphasis on the sustainable management of land for agriculture through its educational outreach programs. The university integrates sustainable farming practices into its curriculum and extends these teachings to the community through workshops, guest lectures, and field visits. These initiatives focus on promoting eco-friendly farming techniques such as crop rotation, organic farming, and the use of bio-fertilizers to enhance soil health and productivity.

Through collaborations with agricultural experts, LPU educates students and farmers of local/ national community on land conservation, efficient land use, and biodiversity preservation. The university’s outreach efforts also include hands-on training in sustainable practices, enabling the local and national communities to adopt methods that promote long-term agricultural sustainability while minimizing environmental impacts. The School of Agriculture, LPU, and NSS unit Prayas organized an Agricultural Awareness Programme at Hardo-Pharala village, coordinated by Dr. Haobijam James Watt and Dr. Sharad Sachan with 10 NSS students. Resource persons from the School of Agriculture delivered talks: Dr. Des Raj Sharma, Dr. Ankush Rawat, and Dr. Sandeep Chaudhary on pest management; Dr. Ujagar Singh Walia on Weed Management in Kharif Crops; Dr. Harmit Singh Thind on Efficient Nutrient Management; Dr. Adesh Kumar on Plant Disease Management using Biopesticides & Biochar; and Dr. Devendra Kumar on Mushroom Cultivation. Dr. Vipul Kumar, Associate Professor (Plant Pathology), along with his ELP (Experiential Learning Program) students, embarked on a crucial initiative: a Farmer’s Field Visit & Hands-on Training on Biopesticides and their application at Indna Kalaske Village, Phagwara, Punjab. This endeavor signifies a pivotal step towards sustainable agricultural practices and eco-friendly pest management solutions. Through this engagement, farmers gain invaluable insights into the utilization of biopesticides, fostering a deeper understanding of their efficacy and application techniques. Dr. Vipul's expertise coupled with the active participation of ELP students ensures a comprehensive learning experience, empowering farmers with practical knowledge to enhance crop protection while minimizing environmental impact. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to bridging academia with real-world agricultural challenges, ultimately contributing to the advancement of farming practices and the well-being of farming communities. One-Day Outreach Workshop on Biochar: An Alternative and Sustainable Method for Stubble Burning – 16-June-2024

The School of Agriculture at Lovely Professional University (LPU) organized a "One-Day Seminar cum Workshop on Biochar: An Alternative and Sustainable Method for Stubble Burning" for the farmers of “Indna Kalas ke” village in Phillaur tehsil. This event was part of the ongoing AAKASH Project, a research collaboration between LPU and RIHN Japan. Over 40 farmers participated in the workshop, gaining valuable insights into biochar production from various crop residues and its importance in sustainable agricultural practices. The seminar featured key speakers from LPU's School of Agriculture, including Dr. Chandra Mohan Mehta (Professor & Associate Dean), Dr. R. K. Gupta (Professor), and Dr. Vipul Kumar (Associate Professor), along with postgraduate scholars. Parthenium Awareness week

Department of Agronomy, School of Agriculture conducted an event named “Parthenium Awareness week”. Parthenium is poisonous, pernicious problematic, allergic and aggressive weed posing a serious threat to human beings and animals, so, it needs proper management. The main focus of the event was to spread awareness amongst the farmers, local people and students about one of the most notorious weeds Parthenium. Campaigning in the nearby villages adopted by LPU was scheduled in order to educate the farmers about various methods of controlling the weed. Approximately 150 students from the school participated in the event and had a wonderful exposure of the extension activity.

From the Department of Plant Pathology, Dr. Adesh Kumar & Dr. Vipul Kumar were invited as resource persons for training on "Trained the Trainers". They were Invited for Lecture on “Mass production of Bio-control agents and their application” at Central Integrated Pest Management Centre, Directorate of Plant Protection Quarantine and storage, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, Jalandhar, Punjab. There they trained officials of the State Agriculture Department about mass production and application of different bio-control agents to safeguard the farmers' crops from insect pests and plant diseases. LPU’s Agriculture students’ start-up ‘Grow Your Farms’ will help 1 crore farmers

Three students at the School of Agriculture under Lovely Professional University (LPU) have vowed to help one crore Indian farmers through their online venture- “Grow Your Farms”. Incubated at the LPU campus, their venture is providing end-to-end “agronomical advisory agricultural inputs solutions” at farmers' doorstep. The students Lakshmi Narayan M. of M Sc Horticulture, Aruneshwar MGB and Prakash S, both of B Sc (Hons) Agriculture, have used futuristic technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Their venture will provide a location and cross-specific solutions to the farming community. India’s Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA & FW) has also offered a ‘Grant’ of Rs 5 lakh to LPU students’ this Agri-venture. LPU students’ team has an offer of this prestigious grant under the ‘Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna - Remunerative Approaches for Agriculture and Allied Sector Rejuvenation (RKVY-RAFTAAR)’ scheme of the Ministry. LPU students’ team is also the youngest team in the country to get selected for this grant.

The purpose of the Agri-Business Incubator at LPU is to inspire, facilitate, mentor, and support young Indian Agri-entrepreneurs with expertise, and know-how such that they attain sustainability, and become profitable companies.

On 21 August 2024, the School of Physical Education at Lovely Professional University organized a Tree Plantation Drive in Chaheru Village, Phagwara involving students in planting 40 trees while promoting the message, “Ped Lagao, Ped Bachao, Sansar Bachao” (Plant trees, save trees, save the world). The initiative educated the local community about the role of trees in combating climate change and enhancing environmental health. Through awareness campaigns with posters and discussions, it inspired collective action for environmental conservation and emphasized preserving nature for future generations.

Punjab State’s Largest Climate Clock Assembly and Display Event

Lovely Professional University (LPU) entered into a collaboration with the Energy Swaraj Foundation to hold Punjab State’s Largest Climate Clock Assembly and Display Event, serving as a leading initiative toward educating the public about the effects of global warming and climate change. The main aim of this climate-oriented mega event was to extend the message of climate preservation and energy economy literacy to the youth and the masses in the state. Alongside the event, LPU utilized social media platforms (YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter) as well as press coverage through its Media Cell to spread awareness about the event's message.

This online session attracted 116 participants and focused on how effective farm management principles can enhance agricultural sustainability. Dr. Chandel discussed the importance of establishing clear long-term and short-term goals while efficiently managing resources such as land, water, labor, and capital. He emphasized the need for strategies to mitigate financial risks from factors like weather variability and market fluctuations. The event " Ecolife: Sustaining Our Planet" was held from 20th to 21st November 2023 at Block 56, blending both online and offline modes of conduct. Organized by the Cultural Coordinator in association with the Species Squad, the event featured Dr. Devi Shankar Suman, a scientist from the Zoological Survey of India, as the resource person. With 30 participants, the event served as a platform to explore the rich biodiversity of our planet and discuss the critical need for environmental conservation. Through interactive sessions and thought-provoking activities, participants were inspired to become advocates for sustainable living.

Guest Lecture on Potential, opportunities and challenges in cultivation of minor fruits in India

On December 2, 2022, the School of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, organized an online event titled "Potential, Opportunities, and Challenges in Cultivation of Minor Fruits in India," featuring Dr. S. S. Hundal, Deputy Director of Horticulture, Punjab, as the resource person. The session was attended by 61 participants and focused on the significant potential of minor fruits in diversifying agricultural production and enhancing farmers' incomes. Dr. Hundal emphasized the opportunities these fruits offer for sustainable agricultural practices, given their adaptability to various climates and soil conditions. He also addressed the challenges faced in their cultivation, such as market access, pest management, and the necessity for ongoing research and development. Highlighting the importance of sustainable land use practices, Dr. Hundal advocated for strategies that improve the productivity of minor fruit crops while minimizing environmental impacts, encouraging participants to explore ways to promote the cultivation of these fruits as a path toward sustainable agriculture in India.

Guest lecture on Importance, scope, status and challenges of floriculture in India

On February 8, 2023, the School of Agriculture at LPU organized an online guest lecture on the "Importance, Scope, Status, and Challenges of Floriculture in India," featuring Dr. Poonam Kumari, a Scientist from CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur. Attended by 79 participants, the lecture focused on the emerging floriculture industry in India, which is still in its early stages but holds great potential, especially in the export market.
Dr. Kumari discussed how floriculture, with its diverse range of flower crops, contributes significantly to the agricultural economy. She emphasized the need for sustainable land use practices in floriculture to ensure long-term soil fertility and biodiversity conservation. The use of integrated farming techniques, crop rotation, and organic methods were highlighted as essential strategies for minimizing environmental impact while maximizing productivity.

The highlight of the show was a beautifully crafted flower rangoli, reflecting the students' artistic talents.
