What you'll learn

This 40-hour course offers hands-on training in video editing techniques, tools, and workflows used in professional environments. Students will learn the art and science of editing for storytelling, news, documentaries, marketing, and social media. The course introduces industry-standard software (like Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Final Cut Pro), with an emphasis on editing theory, audio integration, motion graphics, and export workflows. By the end of the course, students will be able to edit, enhance, and deliver professional-quality videos.

  • History and evolution of video editing Understanding frame rate, resolution, codecs, and formats File management and workflow basics Introduction to editing software interface Importing and organizing media Activities: Navigating software UI Import & bin management Basic clip trimming exercise
  • The art of continuity and montage editing Working with timeline, ripple edits, rolling edits Use of transitions and cutaways Visual storytelling and pacing Storyboarding and rough cut assembly Activities: Edit a 1-minute story using raw clips Use 3 different transition styles Submit a rough cut for peer review
  • Syncing audio, adding background scores, sound effects Voiceovers and dialogue cleanup Using titles, lower thirds, and graphics Intro to color correction and grading Applying LUTs and filters for consistency
  • Export settings for social media, YouTube, and broadcast Codecs and compression Project rendering and delivery Legal considerations: copyright, fair use, licensing Final project presentation and peer review Activities: Final project: 2–3 minute edited video (news story, vlog, ad, etc.) Export for two different platforms (YouTube and Instagram) Submit edit log + reflective report
