LPU Students declared as PM Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ Ambassadors

Lovely Professional University students’ team from programs of B.Sc Agriculture, B.Sc Forestry, B.Tech Civil Engineering has won 1st Runner-up Award in Inter University National Competition on Water Resources Management, held at TERI in New Delhi. Being highly appreciated by both masses and the judges in unison, LPU students are declared as Youth Ambassadors of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s passionate clean India mission, commonly called as ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA)’. Students have also received cash prize of Rs one lakh, paid internship for six months and coveted offer of free education for post graduation.  LPU students are awarded for their live project on floating Island approach for sustainable development of ‘Kanjli wetland’ lying in district Kapurthala of Punjab. In all, 75 teams from across India had competed for 18 months’ long different level competition-as a clarion call to lead in solving India’s water problems. Students from institutions like NIT, DTU, TISS of different states including West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Punjab and more presented "action-oriented, practicable and community participative proposals” to address water and sanitation problems in their respective regions.

Illustrative, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 'Clean India' campaign, he had invited nine well-known people to join this “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”, and also requested each of them to draw nine more into the initiative to take it viral. Through this competition, the same initiative has now included innovative LPU students also. Planned by the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), this competition was funded by Robert Bosch Stiftung, WAPCOS, Ministry of Water Resources Government of India and US-AID. Deputy Advisor (PHE) to Ministry of Urban Development, Mr Rohit Kakkar, and Senior Project Management Specialist (Water & Sanitation) USAID India, Mr Anand Rudra were present on the occasion. LPU team was based on students- Pusapati Chandana &  Anand Charvin G of program B Sc Forestry; Athira VS & Prithvi Ram of B Sc Agriculture; Puneet R Singhal of B Tech Civil Engineering; and their mentors Er Vivek Srivastava & Dr Madhu Sharma. During the competition, LPU team emerged successful in developing a multi-stakeholder understanding for the need of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).

Chandna, who hails from Visakhapatnam, shared: “Our project is very easy to follow and can be used in every nook and corner of the country to make whole of India clean and green. We have lot of pools or ponds or stagnant water drains all around us. These are massive breeders of harmful bacteria and mosquitoes which in turn prove very harmful to the society. We put a foam-matrix on the water surface, grew plants on matrix, roots hosting bacteria go underneath to absorb waste nutrients from filthy water. As such proper water properties are maintained in the water sources without any algae or foul smell.” Similarly, Charvin G who belongs to Kerala told: “If we all get determined, we can convert India’s all small or large wetlands into Paradise. Execution of ideas is more important. Our floating project idea is portable and can also be cheaper with utilization of bamboos instead of foam matrix. Even a swimming pool can also be cleaned and made to give beautiful look with growth of decorative flowers on such a matrix.” Both shared that their preference to join LPU has indeed made them to reach to such glorious heights.

Congratulating the winner team, LPU Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal said: “This great honour for LPU students and faculty members is all because of the revelation of firmness to achieve the target, painstaking planning, inter disciplinary teamwork and great insight. I advise all other students and faculty members to come forth with their society needed projects and work together to build a better and vibrant research environment. The future wants us all to be ever keen to find novel solutions for the challenges we face day to day.”
