Integrated Special and Inclusive Teacher Education Programme

India’s classrooms reflect the rich diversity of its society. Children come from different social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and ability backgrounds. Yet, for many years, education systems across the world have often separated children with disabilities from their peers, creating barriers rather than opportunities. Today, the vision of Inclusive Education challenges this approach by advocating for learning environments where every child learns, grows, and thrives together.

The journey towards inclusive education in India has gained significant momentum through progressive policies and legislation. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016 reinforces the principle of “zero rejection,” ensuring that every child with a disability has the right to access education in mainstream schools. The Act emphasizes reasonable accommodation, individualized support, and educational environments that maximize both academic and social development.

However, despite these strong policy commitments, the reality remains concerning. Reports indicate that a large proportion of children with disabilities in India still remain outside the education system. The reasons are complex and interconnected, ranging from infrastructural barriers to societal attitudes. One of the most critical challenges is the shortage of teachers adequately prepared to work in inclusive classrooms.

Traditionally, Teacher Education in India has followed two separate pathways. One prepares teachers for regular schools, while the other provides Special Education teacher training for specialized settings. This division no longer aligns with the realities of inclusive education, where all teachers are expected to support diverse learners within the same classroom. Inclusive Teacher Education requires collaboration, shared expertise, and a commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind.

This is where the Integrated Special and Inclusive Teacher Education Programme (ISITEP) emerges as a transformative initiative.

What is ISITEP?

The Integrated Special and Inclusive Teacher Education Programme (ISITEP), developed under the guidance of the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), a Statutory Body of Government of India, aims to prepare a new generation of educators equipped to teach all learners, including children with disabilities, across diverse educational settings.

Designed for students after Senior Secondary (+2) education and aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework, ISITEP offers an innovative integrated approach to teacher preparation. For students considering teacher education after 12th, this model provides an opportunity to pursue an inclusive teacher education course while developing specialised competencies for diverse learners.

Rather than separating Special and Inclusive Teacher Education and general teacher preparation, the programme combines them into a single professional pathway. This approach is particularly relevant to students looking for inclusive education courses in India, special education teacher training, or a broader Teacher Training Programme that prepares them for contemporary school environments.

  A Unique Dual-Degree Approach

One of the defining features of ISITEP is its dual-degree structure. Student teachers receive both disciplinary knowledge in their chosen academic field and professional training in special and inclusive education.

The curriculum is carefully designed to integrate:

  • Subject-specific academic knowledge
  • Foundations of education
  • Understanding of disability and diverse learning needs
  • Inclusive pedagogical practices
  • Assessment and evaluation strategies
  • Classroom management in diverse settings
  • Field-based experiences and practical training

This integrated model gives future educators a strong foundation in Teacher Education while developing the practical skills needed for inclusive teaching, differentiated instruction, and effective support for learners with varying abilities and needs.

Preparing Teachers for Inclusive Classrooms

Inclusive education is much more than placing children with disabilities in regular classrooms. It requires adapting teaching methods, curricula, assessments, and learning environments to meet individual needs. Teachers play a central role in this transformation.

ISITEP prepares future educators to use inclusive classroom teaching strategies that respond to different learning profiles while creating a classroom culture built on participation, belonging, accessibility, and respect.

ISITEP equips future educators with competencies to:

  • Identify and respond to diverse learning needs
  • Use differentiated instructional strategies
  • Foster participation and belonging for all learners
  • Collaborate with families and professionals
  • Utilize assistive technologies and support systems
  • Create accessible and inclusive learning environments

By developing these competencies, the programme helps build schools where diversity is viewed as a strength rather than a challenge. For aspiring educators, these skills can also open the door to inclusive teaching careers and a rewarding career in special education, where teachers can contribute meaningfully to the learning and development of children with diverse needs.

Supporting the Vision of NEP 2020

The National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes equity, inclusion, and quality education for all. ISITEP aligns closely with this vision by preparing teachers who can effectively work across all stages of schooling and contribute to the pedagogical transformation envisioned under the policy. The programme’s integrated structure also opens pathways for higher education and professional advancement, ensuring that graduates are equipped for lifelong learning and leadership roles in education.

For students comparing a Teacher Education Course with a conventional Teacher Training Course, the integrated nature of ISITEP offers a broader preparation model that connects subject knowledge, pedagogy, special education, and inclusive practice.

Lovely Professional University’s Commitment to Inclusive Education

At the School of Education, Lovely Professional University, we offer ISITEP at Foundation Stage and Preparatory Stage in Multiple Disabilities. Through the LPU School of Education, the programme provides an opportunity to pursue B.A. B.Ed. Multiple Disabilities, combining academic preparation with professional teacher training for learners with multiple disabilities.

The B.A. B.Ed. Multiple Disabilities LPU programme is designed around the distinctive educational needs of learners who experience more than one disability and therefore require carefully planned, individualised teaching approaches.

Let us first understand what is Multiple Disability. When there is presence of more than one disability in a child/adult, we call him a person with multiple disabilities. For example, a child has visual impairment and cerebral palsy. The characteristics of a child with multiple disability are so unique that they require special teaching pedagogy and cannot benefit from interventions meant only for those with visual impairment or those with cerebral palsy.

The Foundation Stage Teacher Education component prepares teachers to work with children from 3–8 years, covering pre-school to Grade 2, while the Preparatory Stage Teacher Education component focuses on children from approximately 6–11 years, covering Grades 3–5.

A Foundation Stage Teacher Education approach focuses on creating a strong foundation through stimulating all senses of the child, encouraging curiosity, and supporting holistic early development. At LPU, Foundation Stage Teacher Training LPU is therefore centred on developmentally appropriate teaching, early learning, and inclusive classroom practices.

The Preparatory Stage Teacher Education approach focuses on the holistic development of children as they progress through Grades 3–5. Preparatory Stage Teacher Training LPU helps aspiring educators develop the pedagogical understanding and practical skills required to support learners during this important stage of schooling.

Students interested in Inclusive Education LPU, Teacher Education at LPU, or a Special Education Course LPU can explore how the programme combines theoretical foundations with practical experiences to prepare educators for diverse educational settings.

We combine world-class teaching and curricula with cutting-edge technology and facilities. Our educators are passionate about inspiring young minds and, through our exceptional training opportunities, provide students with opportunities to connect theory with practice.

The courses are based on theory and practical learning. It’s said you learn best by doing. The students are provided hands-on experience while transferring their theory base into practical classroom applications. This practical orientation is an important part of LPU Education Programmes, helping future teachers build confidence in planning lessons, adapting instruction, working with diverse learners, and applying inclusive teaching approaches in real educational settings.

Towards an Inclusive Future

Creating inclusive schools is not solely the responsibility of special educators. It requires a collective commitment from teachers, administrators, policymakers, families, and communities. At the heart of this transformation stands the teacher—empowered, skilled, and committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn and succeed.

The Integrated Special and Inclusive Teacher Education Programme represents a significant step towards realizing this vision. By bridging the divide between general and special education, it prepares educators who can embrace diversity, promote equity, and create classrooms where every learner belongs.

As India moves towards a more inclusive educational future, programmes like ISITEP will play a crucial role in shaping teachers who do not simply teach subjects, but nurture the potential of every child.
