LPU Economics Real-World Learning

When the Strait of Hormuz tightens, when tankers queue, oil prices spike, and supply chains buckle across three continents, most people reach for a news app. Our students reach for their notebooks. Not to record what is happening. To explain why.

That is the difference between learning economics and living it.

At Mittal School of Business, Lovely Professional University, we teach Economics. And we want to tell you what that actually looks like — not in terms of credits and contact hours, but in terms of what students walk away being able to do. Through the Economics course at LPU, students experience learning that connects concepts, research, and real-world challenges. The Economics program at LPU focuses on building analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and practical understanding of economic issues.

EduRev: Where Economics Leaves the Classroom

Our Chancellor Sir launched EduRev — Education Revolution as a fundamental reimagining of what university learning can be. The premise is simple yet radical. Real projects. Real impact. Real skills. Not simulations of the world but direct engagement with it.

For Economics students, EduRev has meant something concrete and measurable.

Our students have conducted an economic impact assessment of LPU on the neighbouring villages mapping how a large university institution reshapes local labour markets, land use, household income, and consumption patterns in the communities around it. This is not a classroom exercise. This is applied development economics. The kind of work that government departments and research institutions pay consultants to do.

Our Master’s students did this.

Another cohort evaluated the Drone Didi programme, the Government of India’s initiative to train women in drone technology for agricultural applications. Evaluating a live government programme requires students to design a methodology, collect primary data, assess outcomes against stated objectives, and deliver findings that are actually useful. These students did exactly that.

This reflects the importance of Economics education with experiential learning and shows how students pursuing an Economics degree with research opportunities get exposure beyond textbooks. The focus on Real-world Economics education helps students understand how economic theories are applied in practical situations.

The GROW scheme, Grade Revision and Overall Welfare means that when students publish research, win competitions, file patents, or generate revenue through entrepreneurial ventures, their academic record reflects those achievements. Economics is not only what happens inside a lecture hall. EduRev ensures the university recognises that.

More Than 20 Students. One National Filter.

More than 20 of our students have cleared the UGC NET, the national eligibility test that determines who is eligible to teach and conduct research in Indian universities. This is not a departmental benchmark. It is a national one.

Clearing it places our students among the top percentile of economics graduates across the country. It tells you something about the depth of training they have received and the seriousness with which they have engaged with it.

Our students have contributed to All India Radio demonstrating that economists trained to communicate complex ideas clearly find opportunities that extend well beyond the academic and policy world.

18 book chapters submitted in a single year. By students who are still studying, still building, still becoming. Each chapter is a contribution to published academic literature. Each one evidence that research is not something that happens after graduation here.

Our students have competed and won at national-level competitions, bringing recognition that no curriculum document captures, but every employer notices.

These achievements highlight the growing demand for Economics studies that combine research, communication, and analytical skills. The Economics degree at LPU encourages students to explore areas like policy research, development studies, and applied economics.

What the Curriculum Actually Does

The B.Sc. (Hons.) Economics programme runs across six terms and 162 credits. The M.Sc. Economics runs across four terms, with a dissertation that begins in Term 1 and continues through to Term 4, because original research is not a final-year formality here. It is the spine of the entire postgraduate experience.

The Economics curriculum at LPU is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in theoretical concepts, quantitative techniques, and practical applications. Students pursuing the B.Sc. Economics at LPU and M.Sc. Economics at LPU gain exposure to research-based learning and industry-relevant skills.

Students engage with Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Indian Economy, Econometrics, Development Economics, Public Economics, Environmental Economics, and International Economics, not as isolated subjects but as connected lenses on a single complex world.

Game Theory sits alongside Agricultural Economics in the elective basket because the farmer making a planting decision and the policymaker designing a price-support scheme are both playing strategic games and both deserve economists who can model them.

The quantitative training is serious and sequential. Statistics I and II. Mathematics for Economists. Advanced Mathematics. Basic Econometrics. A Workshop on Data Analysis. By the time our students engage with real policy problems, whether through EduRev field projects or competitive examinations, they can actually handle the data in front of them.

The curriculum prepares students for diverse opportunities after completing an Economics degree, including research, policy analysis, banking, consulting, academics, and government sectors. Students can explore the career scope after B.Sc. Economics and M.Sc. Economics career opportunities through specialised learning and practical exposure.

Teachers at Mittal School of Business do not just deliver lectures. They guide dissertation research from Term 1. They connect students to live policy problems through EduRev. They push students to publish, to compete, to evaluate real government programmes in the field. The classroom is where it starts. The world is where it continues.

The Question Asked on the First Day of Every Semester

On the first day of every semester, students are asked one question.

When the Strait of Hormuz closes for a week, what happens to the price of dal in Punjab?

Not theoretically. Not eventually. Next week.

The ones who can trace that chain from crude oil to fertiliser costs to farm input prices to food inflation to the monetary policy committee’s next meeting, those are the ones who are ready.

Increasingly, that is what our students become.

Why study Economics at LPU? The combination of academic knowledge and application makes it a valuable choice for students looking for Benefits of studying Economics in a dynamic environment.
