What you'll learn

An industry-focused course that equips students with practical skills in concrete technology and modern construction materials, emphasizing sustainability, innovation, and field applications. Students gain hands-on experience through laboratory work, industry interaction, and real-world projects. Upon completion, students will be able to: 1. Understand and apply the properties of concrete and building materials in practical construction scenarios. 2. Design and evaluate concrete mixes for various structural and environmental conditions. 3. Implement sustainable and advanced technologies in material selection and construction. 4. Demonstrate hands-on competence in testing, quality control, and field applications. 5. Integrate industrial exposure with academic learning for professional readiness.

  • • Overview of the construction industry and material supply chain • Classification of building materials and their functional properties • Sustainable construction: circular economy and waste utilization • Standards and specifications (IS, ASTM, BS) • Emerging trends in the construction materials sector
  • • Manufacturing and types of cement (OPC, PPC, PSC, blended cements) • Supplementary cementitious materials (Fly Ash, GGBS, Silica Fume, Metakaolin) • Properties of fresh and hardened concrete • Concrete mix design (IS 10262, ACI method) • Workability tests, strength tests, and durability considerations
  • • Chemical and mineral admixtures: functions and applications • High-performance, self-compacting, and ready-mix concrete • Lightweight and fiber-reinforced concretes • Concrete production, transport, placement, compaction, and curing • Quality control at batching plants and construction sites • Common field problems and remedial measures
  • • Green concrete and low-carbon construction • Use of industrial and agricultural waste (e.g., biochar, recycled aggregates, red mud, fly ash) • Geopolymer concrete: principles and mix proportioning • Nano-modified and 3D-printed concrete • Smart monitoring: sensors and data-driven quality control • Case studies of sustainable concrete projects
  • • Foundations, masonry, and formwork systems • Reinforcement detailing and placement • Building envelope and finishing materials (plaster, flooring, cladding, paint) • Structural and non-structural materials: steel, timber, glass, plastics, composites • Modern construction technologies: precast, modular, and prefabricated systems • Safety and quality management at construction sites
  • • Laboratory testing of construction materials (cement, aggregates, concrete, steel) • Non-destructive testing (NDT) and condition assessment of structures • Quality assurance and quality control documentation • Industrial visits to RMC plants / construction sites / testing labs • Guest lectures and seminars by industry professionals • Mini project / case study on innovative concrete or construction practice
