What you'll learn

Course Outcome CO1: Explain the fundamental principles and processes of project management, including project life cycle, scope, scheduling, budgeting, and risk management. CO2: Demonstrate proficiency in using Microsoft Project (MSP) for creating, managing, and monitoring project plans and schedules. CO3: Apply project management tools and techniques to design, plan, and execute real-world projects with measurable deliverables. Course Description: This course is designed to enhance students’ professional and technical skills through the practical application of project management principles and software-based tools. Learners will gain hands-on experience in planning, scheduling, monitoring, and controlling projects using Microsoft Project (MSP), one of the most widely used project management applications in industry.Through a project-based learning approach, the course focuses on developing essential skills such as team collaboration, leadership, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving, integrated with digital competency in project management software. Students will learn to create realistic project schedules, allocate resources, manage budgets, track progress, and assess performance metrics.By combining theory with real-world project simulation, this course bridges the gap between academic learning and industry expectations, preparing students for roles in engineering, construction, business management, and interdisciplinary project environments.

  • Fundamentals of project management and its relevance in construction industry,Project life cycle: Initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closure,Stakeholders, project organization structures, and communication plans,Key skills for project managers: leadership, teamwork, negotiation, and decision-making
  • Overview of MSP interface and workspace, Creating project calendars, defining tasks, milestones, and dependencies, Developing Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) for construction projects, Resource allocation (labor, materials, equipment) and cost estimation, Creating and interpreting Gantt Charts, Network Diagrams, and Critical Path, Practical Exercise: Develop a complete construction schedule in MSP (e.g., residential/commercial building),Cost planning and budgeting techniques, Resource leveling and optimization in MSP
  • Identification and classification of risks in construction projects (technical, financial, environmental, legal),Qualitative and quantitative risk analysis methods, Risk response planning and mitigation strategies, Using MSP for scenario analysis and impact forecasting, Case Study: Risk-based decision-making using software tools
  • Fundamentals of construction contracts and procurement systems, FIDIC and Indian standard forms of contract overview, Roles and responsibilities of clients, contractors, and consultants, Contract administration: tendering, documentation, dispute resolution
