Ask an <\/span>engineering student<\/b> what they need to succeed, and you are likely to hear three different answers: a good CGPA, strong coding skills, or excellent communication.<\/span><\/p>\n

The debate can become surprisingly intense. <\/span>One student may spend most of their time preparing for examinations, believing that a strong CGPA will lead to better placements. Another may solve coding problems every day and build projects, while barely paying attention to anything outside technical skills. Someone else may focus heavily on presentations, networking, and communication.<\/span>
\n<\/span>So, who has the right approach?<\/span><\/p>\n

The answer is that <\/span>none of these skills can completely replace the others<\/b>.<\/span> CGPA, technical ability, and communication serve different purposes at different stages of an <\/span>engineering student’s career<\/b>.<\/span> The real challenge is learning how to balance them and understanding when each deserves greater attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

CGPA Still Matters-but It Isn’t the Whole Story<\/b><\/h2>\n

Let’s start with CGPA.<\/span><\/p>\n

Academic performance is important, particularly during the early stages of your career. A good academic record demonstrates discipline, consistency, and the ability to understand fundamental concepts. It can also determine eligibility for certain internships, placements, scholarships, higher-education programmes, and competitive opportunities. <\/span>For a student applying for their first internship or placement, CGPA may be one of the first filters an organisation considers.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, getting past a screening criterion is different from getting selected.<\/span>
\n<\/span>A strong CGPA may help you get an opportunity, but it cannot demonstrate everything you can do. Two students with similar academic scores may have completely different levels of programming ability, project experience, problem-solving skills, or communication.<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, the goal shouldn’t be to choose between academics and practical learning. Build a strong academic foundation while gradually developing skills that demonstrate how you can apply what you learn. <\/span>This is why the <\/span>importance of CGPA in engineering<\/b> should be understood alongside practical <\/span>engineering<\/a> career skills.<\/p>\n

Coding Is More Than Solving Problems<\/b><\/h2>\n

For a B.Tech CSE student, technical skills are naturally important. Programming forms the foundation of many careers in software development, artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and other technology domains.<\/span><\/p>\n

But “learning coding” shouldn’t simply mean solving hundreds of programming questions.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Strong technical ability involves understanding <\/span>why<\/b> a solution works, not just memorising patterns.<\/span> It means being comfortable with programming fundamentals, data structures, algorithms, databases, APIs, version control, debugging, and the tools relevant to your chosen field.<\/span><\/p>\n

More importantly, you should learn to apply these concepts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Build projects. Break things. Debug them. Read documentation. Work with other developers. Participate in hackathons or open-source projects. Try solving problems where the answer isn’t available in a textbook.<\/span><\/p>\n

A student who can explain and demonstrate what they have built often has a stronger profile than someone who has simply accumulated certificates. Developing <\/span>coding skills for engineering students<\/b>, especially <\/span>coding skills for BTech students<\/b> and <\/span>programming skills for engineering students<\/b>, can make practical learning much more meaningful.<\/span><\/p>\n

Communication Is a Technical Career Skill Too<\/b><\/h2>\n

Communication is sometimes treated as a “soft skill” that can be developed later. That’s a mistake.<\/span><\/p>\n

Imagine that you have developed an excellent software solution, but you cannot clearly explain the problem, your approach, or the value of your solution to your team.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your technical expertise may not receive the recognition it deserves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Software development is collaborative. Engineers communicate with teammates, project managers, designers, clients, technical leads, and sometimes people who have no technical background.<\/span><\/p>\n

Communication includes much more than speaking fluent English. It means:<\/span><\/p>\n
