Ministry of Communication and IT, Government of India has declared Lovely Professional University as the Best ICT Enabled University of the Year at the 7th e-INDIA awards, at Gandhi Nagar Gujarat. Talking to Media, the Chancellor of the University, Mr Ashok Mittal informed: "It is a matter of great pride for all of us that our University has been awarded the Best ICT Enabled University of the Year award for the University Management System. This project aims to make the university paperless and to provide a fully automated functional e-Governance system that can help in elevating the performance of the staff, students and bring a common platform for managing the affairs of University as well as sharing of the ideas."
The 'e-INDIA award' is the India's largest ICT event; this time, the award ceremony was held at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat by Government of India where Sh Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat, was the chief guest of the event. The award was conferred in principal on the University by MP from Gujarat. Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal added: "Earlier, when people talked about Information Technology, the only places that used to come into their mind were Bangalore and Hyderabad. Now, Punjab has also positioned itself on the top of the list; and, I feel proud while acknowledging that, in Punjab, our Jalandhar City has already started luring people with IT background. I congratulate all my team members, at the helm of IT revolution in the University that has led the field and compelled not only India but the world also to take note of our growth on these lines." He further elaborated: "UMS (University Management System) has cut down the paper usage by 90%. Today, it has more than 92% of its processes on line Students Attendance, Staff, Faculty Bio-metric Attendance, Assignments/Term Papers/Projects, Recruitment of students, E-Notice Board, Time Table, Date Sheet, Seating Plan for Examinations, Results, Fee Deposition, HR Policies and rules, Distance Education, Study Center Management etc. It is hosting on University servers for more than 50,000 users which is one of the highest Technology Parameters deployed in a university."
The ICT-enabled University Award recognizes innovative learning and teaching practice and practitioners in Higher Education systems; and, facilitates means for sharing innovative classroom/administrative strategies and techniques of innovative universities across the Asian Region. As such, the Selection Criteria for the award was based on the evidence that the ICT-enabled education service, of the educational institutes in competition, could be successfully integrated into the total learning process for the relevant course of study; the extent to which the use of ICTs have resulted in practical outcomes that have improved teaching, learning, curriculum design, assessments, and/or administration system; in universities; and, the extent to which the exercise/practice has led to the improved motivation and performance of the education community. This category was open to any innovative project/programme/initiative that has promoted the best use of ICT for teaching-learning or administrative processes in their university. In fact, e-INDIA 2011 Awards have been set up to acknowledge innumerable innovative ICT initiatives that are driving the quality & access of Governance, Healthcare and Education across the country.
